I would bet that this is *exactly* what happened.
Woodward let the rumors go wild about Riley, which risks undermining his ultimate hire. Those rumors were starting to drift into his competence and the competence of the search.
If the 24/7 reports of some of the BOS meeting today is true, it may have been a bit of a "you don't have to tell anyone who, but calm people down, please" conversation.
I was actually surprised the Riley rumors went unchecked for so long, unless Woodward was totally blindsided (which seems unlikely from piecing stuff together).

Can we address this? The rumors were literally on this board and this board only. Not only did every media type not report on it, they openly scoffed at the idea.
