So what's the next steps for such a ridiculous move? Isn't it public records that belong to the taxpayer?

They still have to pay for the labor of it being done. It takes IT staff and systems in place to accommodate. Not sure how other states work but taxpayers are paying for it anyways in Texas.

Not defending the school They’re obviously Inflating this insanely to scare them off.

If they have any evidence and standing, I'd file a lawsuit and request the same records in discovery at no charge. (aside from the legal expenses related to filing the lawsuit).
