This is the biggest thing that I noticed. Ford, Fisher, and Hamill could make Lucas' terrible dialogue sound okay. The actors couldn't do it in the next trilogy...especially Portman and Christenson.

Or maybe it was less noticeable in the original trilogy because I was around 7 when they started airing and I was in my early 30s when the next trilogy finally came around.

Part of the reason is Lucas didn’t direct Empire or RotJ. Kershner and Marquand were able to get good performances out of the actors, it feels noticeably more natural in those films.

That’s not really Lucas’s strong suit (or maybe a stylistic choice), the dialogue in A New Hope can be pretty cringey at times.
