MNC means Mythical National Championship.

Since the installment of the BCS, there is no longer such thing as an MNC.

Yeah...right.

Seriously though, mythical refers to the NCAA not crowning one...I'm fairly certain but not 100%.

No they don't. But since there is a definite NC game, there is no MNC game to be played. Now, USC has a MNC. Mythical in the sense that it doesn't exist.

Mythical because the NCAA DOES NOT recognize a D-1 champion in football. Yes, a team can win the BCSNCG and be crowned national champs, but it is still not officially sanctioned by the NCAA, hence it is mythical.

Until you can emperically prove that a playoff picks the best team of them all (Hint: you can't), I would call it still a MNC. Only truely effective way to crown the best team is by means of some kind of round robin (best case scenario) or multiple elimination set up. I would consider the BCS a step up because it attempts to consider the whole body of work, something a playoff could care less about. Its only failure is that it depends far too much on humans that are given power that they are free to use at will with no recourse.

Aside from that, all of the hubbub of tonight would be gone with a playoff system. What difference does it make that OSU win then? USC will probably still win the Pac-10, which would give them a playoff berth.

The day they add a full playoff is the day that college football dies and completes the transformation to NFL Lite.

It's mythical, so it has no date.

There's a 2-team playoff that occurs in January in Miami.
