I’ll be honest, aborted fetus never crossed my mind. Nobody disposed of an aborted fetus by throwing it off a bridge.
I always assumed it was a ring or other token of affection. The female narrator rejected Billy Joe for some reason, and Billy killed himself. She felt responsible, had said some mean things, and now she feels guilty. Doesn’t want to talk about it. Maybe they had had sex, etc. And now she lives with the guilt.
