He eventually told me that the previous auditor was his neighbor and he'd known him since the guy was in diapers which makes me think he could put his foot down and get his way with that kid not wanting to piss off his neighbor.

I have a client who gets pissed off about stuff like this every single year and says "previous auditor let us do it" all the time too. Like I'm just going to let things that fly in the face of accounting principles and may even be illegal just slide because you used to pay a moron to audit your books.
