Does the "white whale" exist? Does a SUSTAINER exist?

I do not see one guy - not one - that I feel convinced could do at LSU what Nick Saban has done at Alabamm, and that is to turn a football program into an absolute dynasty - reload, reload, and reload some more. It's ridiculous how deep they always are at every f*^_ing position.

I'd say Smart is coming close. He's got Georgia reloading/contending for playoff every year.

As for other conferences, it's impossible for me to know if a Riley or a Day could do at LSU what they're at their respective schools.

Bottom line we're kind of rolling the dice no matter what we do, so I'd prefer Kiffin BUT with a great defensive coordinator. Kiffin is yet to field a decent defense, and that concerns me.

U assume “the guy” is in control.

Requires the key stakeholders to be aligned, including Gov, BOS, President, financiers, alum, etc.

Need guy who accepts nothing less than alignment AND a system that is aligned.

You’re basically hoping Kiffin turns into what Riley already is. There isn’t another Saban out there. He’s changed the expectations for coaches to a point that it will take several years of him being retired to correct itself. People knock Riley for OU’s easy schedule and playoff performance, but it’s pretty much the same thing Smart is doing in the East, and without all the 5-stars on defense.

There's a good reason you don't see this guy. It has never been done in history prior to him

As far as I’m concerned, there is only 1 white whale in college football, and he ain’t leaving Tuscaloosa.

The only elite college coach not named Saban is Brian Kelly.

Check the resume.

I disagree. Brian Kelly is nowhere close to Saban.

I'm not too thrilled with Kelly's recruiting.

Yes, but there is one skill Saban has mastered that I'm not seeing in any candidate out there, and that is OVERCOMING THE HUMAN CONDITION. It was after that bastard left LSU and after Miami Dolphins that he perfected his art to a degree I've rarely seen. Granted, Skip Bertman is a guru at it too, but it's a different sport so I'll stay on Saban. He has a knack of keeping his coaches and players - MORE TIMES THAN NOT - 100% focused and to not relax/to sustain the success. The Human Condition is to relax, particularly after you've achieved great success. This is exactly what countless others - both players and coaches i.e. Edward Orgeron - have done. They relaxed just ever so slightly and fell off the top of the mountain.

Right, Smart has not reached the pinnacle, but he does not let the program slip. He's good for 10 or 11 wins a year. He's contending for the playoff most seasons. I don't want to suck his pecker like you're inferring, but I'll give credit where it's due. He's recruiting very well, and he's contending.

With more seasoning and patience I think Dave Aranda has the intelligence and discipline to become an elite. He gets it but needs a good OC to help him be truly elite.

LSU probably couldn’t do any better than DA from the standpoint of class, ability and untapped potential.

You'll never hire another Saban. We need a good recruiter who can lock down one side of the ball and have us consistently in the top 10-15 and in the mix for the SEC West more years than not.
