Daughter's passport expires in April 2022. We travel to the Czech Republic and Poland first week in December 2021. Some question on if she needs to renew or not.

This is what's giving us pause:

Traveling Through Europe: If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, you should be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement.

Passports should be valid for at least six months beyond the arrival date into Schengen, to avoid difficulties entering and traveling within the Schengen zone.

Entry / exit to Poland and Czechia?
Re-entry into the US?

Anyone know anything about this? Thanks!

Travel To Europe.

Some countries require more than 6 months. She should have renewed already. I found it straight from the State Dept website.

LINK

Click on Entry, Exit, and Visa requirements. She needs it renewed, ASAP.

For the record, there are some countries that require as long as 18 months. Don't plan on traveling with an almost expired passport.

Thanks. We're writing the Consulate as we speak.

This one’s hard to understand when it’s still valid for four months before expiration.

How would one "expedite" the passport ASAP?

Czech seem more lenient than Polish when returning.
IMHO, I second LaLadyinTx
Get a new passport application started now and expedite it.
Other threads have addressed the expediting process.

Thank you for that too!

Kids.

So, looks like Plan A is: Expedite that thing.

Plan B: Salvage European Trip with wherever the hell would take someone with a valid (but expiring in 4 months) passport in Europe.

Plan C: Go to some other country that takes the passport.

Plan D: Just schedule another trip!

Here is the state department on expedited passports

LINK https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/get-fast.html

And this is from a third party courier type service, I have never used it
Main site
LINK https://www.us-passport-service-guide.com/us-passport-renewals.html
So you pay whatever they charge, then for expedited you may need to pay more
Sample times are also listed

quote:

Routine Passport Service Processing time: 10-12 weeks Additional requirements/fees: none
Expedited Passport Service: Processing time: 4-6 weeks Additional requirements/fees: An additional fee and evidence of travel plans are required.
Emergency Passport Service: Less than 2 weeks (requires additional fee and submission of documents at a regional passport agency)

Nah.

We’re already booked up. No worries here. This was a major milestone birthday trip for her so we’re trying to work it out.

I would’ve honestly thought if I had a passport it was still valid for four months I’m not sure I would’ve worried either. Lesson learned!!

It took us 2 months to get passports renewed. Last week of July to last week of September.

Can't comment on the passport issue. But good luck on the Poland/ Czech Republic trip. I went to Krakow and Prague 2 years ago and loved both. If you're going to be around Krakow I would definitely try to visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine. It was a last minute addition to our trip but ended up being one of my favorite parts. Amazing carvings into the walls of the salt mine that date from modern times all the way back over hundreds of years.

You have to stop thinking of a passport expiration date like a driver’s license. The drivers license allows you to do something in your own country. The passport allows you to return to your home country. Other countries want to know you can get home. Some even require that you have a return ticket. They want you to have plenty time to get back to the USA before it expires. Most of the time, you should get it renewed when there’s still a year left.

I would not pay extra $$$ for a third party. It’s usually not recommended by the State Dept or by any travel websites or travel advisors. They cannot do anything you can’t do yourself. Additionally, if you needed to get a Senator involved, the third party would make it harder.

Get it sent off ASAP. Pay all the extra fees to get it done.

Your travel is far enough away to get the passport. Someone else already posted this, I believe.

Just took me 5 weeks to get a passport expedited, fyi. Received it last week so this was recent. Issue for you might be scheduling the appointment to renew. I had to schedule 3-4 weeks in advance.

We did my kids renewal on July 18th. This thread reminded me to check the status. Shows it was approved and should have it by the 24th. This was not expedited, just normal turnaround.

UPDATE

Thank you for all the invaluable insights. As an FYI, we're trying to help her expedite this thing. She contacted her Senator yada yada to tee it up.

But..

We got this from the Embassy:

Dear Sir/ Madam,

Thank you for your e-mail. The passport must be valid for three months after the date of departure from the Schengen area.

Best regards,

Embassy of the Czech Republic
Consular section - Visa unit

So damn confusing sometimes.

Problem with that email is that you are depending on the airlines to enforce it. I’d jump thru every hoop possible to get the passport. The airlines might decide to follow the rules shown on the State dept website and not let her on the plane to go on the trip.
