Can you just buy a cpap machine and supplies without the doctor’s red tape and the insurance company’s blessing?

Yes. You just need a prescription. After doing research on r/cpap and r/SleepApnea. I bought a Resmed Airsense 10 Auto CPAP from cpap.com and got it in 3 days. There are other online stores that might be cheaper, but most of them don't have stock with the Phillips recall that is going on.
I have HDHP ins and with my deductible that would have reset in Jan, decided I'll just pay out of pocket. I'll reimburse myself with my HSA sometime in the future.

Lots of used machines on Craigs list. span of output is 0-20 inches of water. much above 14-15 setting will blow the mask off face, much below 10 inch is not useful, so pick a setting. I love my Cpap for the last 10 years

You can do whatever you want but you should have the CPAP machine calibrated to your specific condition
Also just so know, CPAP machines are not all the same. It’s not a “One size fits or all” type of deal.
