I first came across his name in the acknowledgments for The Silmarillion, when Christopher Tolkein thanks Kay for his help in editing the manuscripts into the final book (published after J.R.R. Tolkein's death).
Most of Kay's novels are what would be called "historical fantasy." That is, they are set on other worlds, where there are other (real) gods, and where there can be powerful magic and sorcery, but the characters live and act as though they are from the 7th-century Eastern Roman Empire, 8th-century China, medieval Spain, etc.
I've read A Song for Arbonne, Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors (a duology), and Tigana.
While I enjoyed the other three books very much, I thought that Tigana was a true masterpiece. I thought that the religion and setting were incredibly well imagined, the characters and story arc were engrossing, and the final twist at the end was just perfect.
Any other fans of Kay's writing out there? Which of his books should I read next?

I've only read Tigana, I enjoyed it a lot, particularly the beginning, it had a solid enough ending but didn't quite bring it all home in the way I wanted it. Definitely worth a read though

I've only read Ysabel and was not impressed.

When I was in grad school I read The Lions of Al-Rassan and I liked it a great deal.
