I grew up in Pinevile and we called the big holes where they dug out gravel and sand "bar" pits.

I have no idea why. Some redneck probably misunderstood a word and it caught on to all rednecks and their offspring.

I learned some weird words from my north LA redneck parents.

They rurnt me good.

We called them bar pits, but my dad said that was redneck for borrow pit. As in they borrow the dirt from there to build up the bed for the nearby highway.

He always warned that they weren’t dug as ponds with a sloped bottom, so the depth is unpredictable. A kid can be wading knee deep fishing and then step off a damned underwater cliff and drown.
