Taste of a Bad Gamble

OK Miles is rightfully known to be a successful riverboat gambler type Coach.
However as we saw Saturday night just prior to halftime Miles riverboat style doesn't always payoff.
Down 7-3 with less than 2 minutes remaining in the half near his own 20 yard line with a struggling QB who I don't think had yet to complete a pass, Miles elects to go with a 2 minute offense vs. running out the clock and regrouping at halfttime. Result pick 6 the other way? Halftime score Auburn 14 LSU 3.
Not knocking Miles just thought it was a bad gamble at that time of the game. Then again, no way do I throw a pass on 2nd and one with less than a minute on the clock with a kicker like LSU has in near chip shot range.
Guess that's why Coach Miles makes the big bucks.

If you wouldn't have tried to score before half, you are a pussy.
Miles would be booed out of TS if he did that at home.

You said it all right there... That's why he makes the big bucks. If he doesn't put it in the endzone and opts to take the 3pts at the end, Auburn changes their game plan to "Just get in field goal range" and we probably lose. He's one crazy SOB, but he really does take calculated risks, and until that changes, I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

bad play or not, poor execution is what caused the pick-6

I don't think that it was a gamble at all every coach that i know would run their two minute offense when its time to run the Two Minute offenese

or, look at it the other way...
we have the ball in a game of limited possessions and every play really does matter
we call a play to get the ball in the hands of our most explosive RB
we call a play that we scored a long TD on against auburn last year
its probably the easiest pass for lee to throw, thus gaining confidence
now lee messed it all up by throwing maybe the worst pass in the history of football

I think that you enjoy the attention of your negative posts. As to your point on the last TD pass, why wouldn't you prefer a 5 point lead over a 2 point lead with still a minute left to play?

Yup, Miles' "gamble" caused the worst interception of all time, on a "gamble" of a play, a SCREEN TO THE F-ING HALFBACK. I don't think I have ever seen a pass like that to a halfback ever get picked off. At any level off football. It was just awful, and had nothing to do with Miles' "gambling," it had every thing to do with the fact that Lee was WAY too nervous at the point.

You are an idiot, sir! The mistake was not the played called - it was the lack of execution on the part of the QB. It happens. Same thing happened to our 5th year senior QB last season at Alabama. It's not a bad call on 2nd and 1. Ideally, if the play is covered, you just throw it to the sidelines. Lee just floated the ball too much, like he was aiming in a dart game. He obviously learned from it as evidenced by his 2nd half performance. I'll admit I cursed the play, but soon realized it was just poorly executed.

My thoughts were the better risk was to kick the FG with no time remaining on the clock. Assume LSU gets the first then taken a knee that would have forced Auburn to burn their final two timeouts and LSU could have run the clock down to 4 or 5 seconds leaving no time for Auburn to do anything.

Auburn had at least two if not all three timeouts at that point. They would have gotten the ball back with probably 35+ seconds. I would much rather give it to them 1:02 left and a 5 point lead, then 35 seconds with a 2 point lead. Especially considering they did drive the field on us fairly effectively on that final drive.

He choked on the throw. If he would of zipped in the pass to KW there was a big gain coming. The defender made a good play on a bad pass but the defenders where not in postion to stop KW.

Pretty sure Auburn only had 2 timeouts left. Even if they had 3 left the assumption is that LSU runs for a 1st down forcing Auburn to burn one of them. Take a knee on 1st down forcing Auburn to burn another then another knee on 2nd down forcing Auburn to use their last time out (whcih again I think they only had 2 left) then take the knee on 3rd down run the clock down to 3 seconds and kick a near chip shot FG.
Guess it all boils down to how much confidence you have in your special teams. If you have supreme confidence I would take a chance on a FG that leaves no time left on the clock then a 5 point lead giving my opponent 50 seconds and 2 timeouts to score a TD.

Lee said after the game that the Auburn defense wasn't lined up and ready, so he thought he could catch them off guard. He floated the ball and it got picked off. A mistake by the QB, not the coaches on that one.
