For the talent levels Saban left him with, Miles underperformed vastly.

he only lost 6 games in the first 3 years and finished #5, #3 and #1, what realistically do you expect? I guess this is where you whine on about 2005 Tennessee as if 1 bad loss is everything and as if other coaches (including Saban) have never had bad loses

Jamarcus Russel, Dwayne Bowe, Early Doucet, Buster Davis and 3 points against Auburn? And what 10 against Florida?

First of all 2006 was not like it is now but those 2 top 10 SEC teams with great defense on the road. Do you think Meyer is a good offensive coach? He mustered only 13 vs Alabama with Tim Tebow and Aaron Hernandez.

Miles offense was not the same pre 2008 like it was after.

Should I go on about the 07 season and the two inexplicable losses?

we won the fricking national title

LSU settled with Miles.

Then name the magic mystery coach we should have hired instead? Who was available in January 2005 that would have done so much better? The only coaches that you could credibly argue would have done better had just left for the Dolphins job and taken the Florida job a month earlier. You are letting MDS get the best of you, he was flawed yes, but he did a very good job here, denying that is having impossible standards

Truthfully I don’t remember who else was available. Meyer maybe? I do know that Les Miles wasn’t a hot name and maybe as good or bad as anyone out there. Jimbo Fisher was still on staff and I don’t think he’d do worse with the talent we had.

The losses in 2005 and 2006 with that talent were head scratchers. Comparing the 06 Auburn team to a nick Saban recruited defense that beat Florida in 09 is truly a stretch. Auburn lost to Arkansas at home if I recall. I didn’t even bring up Tennessee but that was another one where Miles couldn’t adjust. Miles didn’t do badly but for the levels of talent Saban left him, he was at best an ok care taker. For a little while anyway. Everything you’ve posted is what people rationalized to keep miles around as LSU as a program regressed ever so slowly. He wasn’t a great hire by any stretch.
