Why though

Because the Heisman is generally given to the best player on the best teams. It implies that not only are you a stat machine but you're also winning.

Thought Max’s record this year was 3 - 1

Oklahoma may have “won” their games, but Spencer Rattler has not been the reason why by any means. Their fans were literally booing him and chanting for the backup QB this weekend.

Many who vote for the Heisman trophy are generally pretty lazy and some (maybe many) don't even follow college football all that closely. Thus, it becomes a "best OFFENSIVE player" on the "best team" award. Sometimes that is the obvious choice. Ex. Burrow, Cam Newton. Sometimes it is a questionable choice. Geno Torretta over Marshall Faulk. Mark Ingram when he averaged less ypg than Anthony Dixon...in just the SEC.

Johnson is ranked in the top 20 in passing yards per game, passing TDs, points responsible for and passing efficiency. That means he is AHEAD of Daniels, Rattler and the Cincinnati QB in ALL four categories. He's tied or ahead of Bryce young in 2 of those 4.

Yet, those 4 are currently in the top 5 of the race in terms of betting odds while Johnson is nowhere close.

It is as much a "popularity contest" as a best player award. Unfortunately, LSU is out of the top 25 and the 8-6 record since 2019 has taken them out of the national spotlight.
