Derby County will be deducted 12 points with immediate effect after the Championship side entered administration, the English Football League (EFL) said on Wednesday.

The 12-point deduction, the standard penalty for a club entering administration, will leave them bottom of the standings on minus two points, six adrift of their East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest.

Derby could still face a separate points penalty for breaching the EFL's financial regulations. They were fined £100,000 ($136,170) by an independent disciplinary commission in July accounting irregularities.

Basically the club filed for bankruptcy protection. Doing that means an automatic points deduction per league rules. Also means relegation.

I bet on Derby to go down at the start of the season as this was inevitable and they only had 7 senior players. To be fair to Rooney they have been playing pretty well and I don't think they are certainities to go down

However there is another investigation into their account which could cost up to another 9 points which would seal the deal

No team getting the points deduction for administration has avoided relegation.

It’s a death sentence for the season.

Is this footballs version of debtors prison?
You're down so here is a kick and dirt on your grave

In my mind these things seem to happen late in the season?
Maybe being early in year gives them time to make up the ground
They had 10 points in midtable before this
