We bout to ride baws

quote:

For the first time in years, the recreational red snapper bag limit in Louisiana will double to four fish per person, per day. Additionally, the red snapper season is moving to 7 days per week until further notice. The changes will be welcomed by anglers along with marinas and other entities that depend on business from recreational anglers. The increased bag limit and daily open season was set today when Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Jack Montoucet signed a declaration of emergency to re-open the recreational red snapper season on Friday, Sept. 24.

I feel really ignorant asking this but, why is it an emergency?

In the article they seem to make it about helping the marinas generate cash quickly. To be honest I’m not sure. Maybe declaration of emergency is just how they make short notice decisions like this.

Looks like they're trying to kick up some business for the marinas hurt by Ida.

quote:

“Providing this opportunity will help bring business back to our marinas, docks, and the charter fishing industry, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida,” says LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet. “Opening this season now also allows anglers the ability to harvest amberjack and red snapper simultaneously as the recreational greater amberjack season is scheduled to run through October.”

Then they'll make us pay for it next year by chopping the season or limits.

What they should be doing is cutting back on commercial harvest

So it is about the $$$, not the fishery. Glad we got that straight.

Venice is going to be a madhouse during this since Grand Isle is impossible to get to right now

Maybe I'm way off here but I'm not seeing the issue. Per the article ~30% of the quota is still on the table, bumping the limit to 4 will let those able to fish take advantage of additional fish they can take, entice people to get out on the water when they normally wouldn't, and put some money in these marina's pockets. The fishery will be just fine.

Everyone cries that 2 snapper isn't enough and they're overpopulated, they make it 4 temporarily and people say it'll hurt the fishery.

Not sure if that was directed to my earlier comment but that is not what I was saying. I'm saying that none of the decisions ever made about the red snapper regulations were related to acquiring accurate data or maintaining a healthy GOM red snapper fishery. Its $$$ and this emergency action is no different.
