Smoke travels because of the temperature difference and subsequent convection currents from the heat below. As the smoke particles cool and reach ambient temperature they settle to the ground. The molecular weight of the virus is a lot higher than ambient air molecules and they too will eventually fall to surfaces. In cool environments it will take longer for the virus to fall from the air. In hot environments where the ambient temperature is close to body temperature the viruses will fall quickly to the floor.
