Of course this is plausible. The mask will have some positive effect depending on type and how it is worn. But it's not 100% like a level A HAZMAT suit with a self contained breathing apparatus.

There are other entryways to your mucous membranes other than your mouth and nose that the masks do not protect you from. Like your eyes.

IMO the virus is predominantly transmitted by touching. People touch their face 1000s of times a day. The virus is picked up my their hands and transmitted to the mouth, nose and eyes by touching. Can it transmit by air? Absolutely. It's just my opinion that viruses are transmitted by touching more than by air.
