Letterman did too and was clearly training him to be his successor, but Norm despised authority and every executive in Hollywood hated him. The only reason Norm continued to get gigs is his fellow comedians not allowing him to be cancelled.

I can’t find the clip of it for the life of me. But I’ve seen someone in comedy asked about why Norm wasn’t a bigger deal in show business.
The answer was along the lines of “he’s brilliant but the most unprofessional person in Hollywood. If you cast him as the lead of your sitcom, not only will he not show up to shoot the pilot, he may not even be in California on that day.”
Makes a lot of sense that Letterman would have tried to name him as his successor, though. He had a huge soft spot for Warren Zevon as well - another borderline genius whose career never ascended to the extent that his talent dictated, for almost exactly the same reasons that Norm’s never did.
