I think that’s a good measure of his character. He’s got an apathy that a young person idolizes. But that “too-cool-for-school” attitude eventually gets super annoying and makes him seem self-important.

This is what always annoyed me about Jim. Every office has one of them. He never realizes his full potential in a career, but instead of taking steps to better himself, he just resents his situation and everyone around him. He’s surrounded by decent, salt of the earth people, but he’s constantly complaining about them and looking for reasons to not hang out or form any meaningful relationships, all the while also hating the rut that he has carved out for himself.

Yep.

I mean Jim’s biggest problem with Dwight is that Dwight legitimately cares and works hard at his job.

Sure the guys weird and at the point of the show he’s writing jim up to hr but Jim is mentally torturing Dwight with constant outlandish pranks.

As I get older I empathize more with Dwight rather than Jim. When I was younger it was the opposite.

Right. If Jim has such potential and is such a genius, why wouldn’t he have left by then? Is he supposed to be Steve Jobs in chains? I get that he’s “relatable” but the people similar to him that I know irl are irritating.

Angela? Creed? Meredith? Decent, salt of the earth people? Ryan? Stanley (kind of an a-hole AND cheats on his wife)?

Phyllis and Toby are pretty much the only ones that are as you described. Kevin is weird, but clearly looks up to Jim - and Jim is nice to him.

Nah. Jim had everyone over to his house for a party at least once. Did they return the favor? Jim led the Office Olympics - to help them past their humdrum existence.

Oh - and as noted by Pam at the beach - these "decent, salt of the earth people" basically all stood her up on the most important night of her life.

Isn't this the biggest compliment you can give tho that they absolutely nailed the character?

In the end we see the growth of Jim and that he ends up genuinely liking most of his peers. I think when you rewatch the show you know that Jim ends up being a good guy so you watch it through that lens.
