Throughout the show he screws multiple people over, sometimes for personal gain and sometimes for cheap amusement. He’s obviously a sadist, displayed through his torment of Dwight. In general I think he’s a self-serving, self-aggrandizing scumbag.

i think those midseasons around Charles Minor and Robert California the writers didn't know what to do with Jim and Pam as the starcrossed lovers that finally ended up together. in a group of people where they, Oscar, and Toby are the only normal ones, there wasn't much more to do then make them kinda assholes. i.e. Pam missing Michael's last day, Jim skipping work after getting dismissed from Jury Duty, etc.

that being said, Jim saved Dwight from getting the axe while getting rid of a toxic Todd Packer, avoided cheating with a naked woman in his room, was supportive of Andy, and gave Daryl a huge opportunity with Athleap/d.

Charles Minor was a great period for the show.

But yeah after Michael left, the hole was too big for the writers to fill. Jim and Pam were helpful for the audience to have someone to relate to, but they are not what drove the show. The final few episodes are decent, but on the whole the show never found what it wanted to be without Michael.

Personally I think they should have committed to Dwight being boss for the remainder, because he’s just as much of a mess as Michael, and nearly as funny.

I acknowledge this is off-topic and I’m hijacking this thread (there should be a larger Office Theory 101 thread), but this is a huge gripe of mine. If you watch the earlier seasons, everyone was relatively normal save for Michael and Dwight. It made the whole environment that much more realistic and the litany of straight men worked as a more vivid foil to Michael and Dwight’s characters. I think it wasn’t the initial intention of the writers that once they continued on from the end of the British Office, they were to Flanderize all of the secondary characters. I do understand that the show wouldn’t have run as long without adding in the zany quirks to Kevin, Kelly, Angela, etc, but maybe that would’ve been ok...
