Tore my left shoulder in 2008 on incline dumbbells. I felt the pop and wasn't able to do a pushup until I had the surgery, which I had a year later when I could afford it. Had an arthroscopic Bankart repair in 2009 and been good ever since. I'd recommend the surgery, but my tear was too bad to try and mitigate in other ways.
