People completely misinterpret that line to begin with.


It refers to Puritan times where women were generally submissive and went along with society.

In general, you don’t get an attagirl for being a functioning member of society but get written about if you are a rebellious little shite wearing a scarlet letter.

In show business it's called 'bad publicity is better than no publicity.'
It actually started in the 1890s-1920s career of Sarah Bernhardt in live stage and then silent movies. She purposely misbehaved constantly so newspapers and magazines would cover her.
