4K projector

Anyone have any experience with these? Converting my carport into a man cave and have been exploring TV ideas. Was considering a lower end 75-85inch tv (maybe a 4 series tcl) to mount on wall but my brother says to go with a projector. Hows the picture on these ? I’m not as picky as most. I’d sacrifice a little picture quality for a huge arse screen for football games and maybe a little light gaming . What am I looking to spend on a decent set up ? My other question is how does it work as far as getting my shows and stuff on there ? Hdmi ports ? Excuse my ignorance I have zero experience with these. Thanks in advance.

Short throw laser projector is a great option…you can move it wherever you want and make it as big or small as needed

Is there anything in the 1-2k range that’s decent ?
When I search the short throw everything is 3k+.
I just don’t think I can get Mrs jkyle on board with spending over 2k on this set up.

I have an LG HU810P laser projector. It's been pretty excellent in the few months I've had it. I don't think you're gonna get real 4k for your budget. Some sort of upconvert maybe.

Just installed in on Friday at work for a golf simulator. We went with a 4K BenQ on a 16.5’ screen and enclosure from Carl’s Place. We played on it for the first time yesterday and it was nothing short of amazing! It doesn’t get much better than 70 degree golf in the summer.

Awesome. What did you BenQ run you. If you don’t mind my asking. I see their models ranging all over the place. A great brand from consumer reviews I see.

We went with the BenQ LK953ST. It’s a little pricey, but we needed a short throw that could handle such a big screen.

Definitely go the projector route if you want impact. Once you see it you won't regret it... and hopefully your wife will enjoy it enough to allow upgrades down the road! You'll likely be best off ceiling mounting, which has the downside of needing to run power & cable but that's a one time deal. What are you going to use for sound? Don't just throw a soundbar in there for a 100" + size screen...
In the under $2K range you're looking at projectors from LG, Optoma, BenQ and a few other brands that are all based on similar internals, but some implementations definitely seem to be done better than others. Depending on what you value for your setup (brightness, color accuracy, black level) that could swing things one way or another.
There are a couple of good sites that feature reviews of many projectors:
Projector Central has a lot of reviews, plus a nice searchable database where you can filter on various things. (But be careful b/c not all "specs" are the same, some companies are bad about inflating brightness, contrast ratings to look good on paper, etc.)
Projector Review (Home Theater) does good reviews too.
For connecting, yeah you'll need an HDMI cable from a receiver presumably. Monoprice for a quality cable, make sure it's high speed rated and figure out your setup and necessary length first. Depending on where you put your source & gear vs the projector you might need 10' or 35'.
