In Lafayette, some of us were just waiting for one or two people to get offended by "Ragin' Cajuns" before making an issue out of it.

Luckily, there's enough people with common sense to laugh it off and ignore them.

They can frick right off. Everyone talks about how people of color were being oppressed but not one mention of how Cajuns came to be living in the swamps of south Louisiana from Nova Scotia.

Are you too young to remember the stink some groups put on when the Cajundome was named? Some weenies wanted to call it the Lafayette Assembly Center. That died pretty quick.

It was the summer of 1970. Although a Centenary student I took a couple of classes at USL while home for summer vacation.
I was sitting in the student union reading the school's student paper. I think it was called The Vermillion.

There had been a push by some black students to change the name since not a lot of players were Cajuns.
Someone wrote a letter to editor and said, 'OK, let's change the name to USL Ragin Cajuns Plus Some N*****S.'
They printed it. And they did not use asterisks.
The football team at that time was still majority white but probably only a 1/4 were Cajuns.

I'd love to see Nichols change their mascot to the Fightin' Coonasses. The people down Bayou Lafourche and Terrebonne Parish would love it too. Hell, I'd buy season tickets even if I'd never get to a game.
