Why did Eugene play press and Hawkins play 7 yards off?

Just curious why you mix the 2 different styles of coverage like that? I know Hawkins had a bunch of passes completed in front of him, but when they have him playing that far off he starts off every play at a disadvantage.

He keeps everything in front of him, in turn, it gives him the opportunity to make the tackle. That was the best WR UNT had. I think it was a reasonable strategy, and Hawkins executed what was asked.

Yeah, it was pretty funny sitting in the SEZ upper and listening to the bitching all around me about Hawkins sucking and we can't stop these guys and crap. Then at the end you look up and we give up 3 points and 200 yards total offense.

it would have been fun to see peterson press the guy hawkins was on, just to see how he measures up. But i believe hawkins will be solid, unless he proves through his play to be otherwise.

they did that on 1st and 2nd down...

played the 1st down markers

on 3rd down, we blitzed..

that looked like the game plan to me

Because N Texas couldn't run on us and they had no threat of throwing the deep ball. Keep everything in front and they will not score. It worked.

Teams that blitz alot play corners deep too.

N Texas could have hurt us only with a big play. Playing CB's deep prevented that

Call me biased when it comes to him, but....

I played ball with Hawkins for about 5 or 6 years, through high school. The guy is an incredible athlete.

I don't care if it was my own brother out there fricking up on coverage. If he can't get it done, he can't get it done. And I'd have no problem saying that. I thought CH did a good job of keeping his man in front of him.

As you said, they didn't score a TD, and were limited to offensive production, period. If he would've played bump and run coverage, who knows what would have happened. The object of the game is to score more points than the other team. If they nickel and dime you to death, but they don't score, you must be doing something right.

I didn't tape the game, so I can't go back and get too specific, but there were many occasions when Hawkins had no help over the top and played off, while the other receivers had bump coverage.

The N. Texas QB deserves a lot of credit.

He took what we gave, and made some very precise throws.

I dare say he may have run our offense better than our QB's did, not that ours were not adequate.

North Texas Offensive Player Quotes

Giovanni Vizza, QB
On what he took away from this game ...
ÒWe definitely got better as a team. We had a lot of drives where penalties hurt us, but all in all I think we improved.Ó

On if he ever felt the game was out of control ...
ÒI feel like the first half we were in control. We played well in the first half. We were able to keep the pressure off. I never felt that we were not in control.

On the LSU defense ...
ÒLSU definitely has a great defense. TheyÕre the defending national champions, but I feel like we sill played well.Ó

On running quick pass routes against LSUÕs secondary ...
ÒIt was part of our offensive game plan, to get off the line and get ahead of the chains. We always, against any team we play, try to take what the defense gives us. LSU has great corners, but I think it was part of our game plan coming in and the coaches saw something they thought we could take advantage of so we did it.Ó

quote:

TODD DODGE, HEAD COACH OF NORTH TEXAS

On if this was a typical offense or one prepared especially for LSU...
ÒIt is our offense. We try to spread the ball to different people. Against a team like LSU and their great front, we had to get the ball out of our hands in a hurry. Our game plan was when we had favorable numbers in the box, try to run the ball. When we got clean completions in our no huddle offense, take them and donÕt pass them up. We had a plan to do a few more jail break screens; we did that a little bit early. Quick passing game and those jail break screens, you use those as a run game, trying to get the sticks moving. At times we were able to do that. We got behind the chains with some penalties as the game went on. This is just a very talented bunch. They started bringing the heat the second half. It was really effective in our run game as much as it was in our pass game. Their defensive front is unbelievable. Those guys they roll in there are v very impressive.Ó

There could be several reasons.....

1) DB's can afford and sometimes must give more cushion on the week side of the formation. Safty help could be shaded or brought up closer to the line of scrimage to defend a specific WR or for run support. (Better to keep things in front of you if you dont have over the top help).

2) The game plan against LSU was to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible. If your trying to defend the out, curl, slant, screen ect ect......you have to get up on your man as a DB which requires Saftly help and possibly dropping a LB into zone. Again, better to keep things in front of you if you're the guy without any help. Dont want to give up any home runs.

What troubled me a little was our enability to collapse the pocket with our front four and get more of a push. I know they were getting rid of the ball fast....but when you're bull rushing thier own men in the QB's face and extending hands up in the passing lanes, you can cause alot of disruption. We've seen a lot of that the last two years........not so much these last two games.
