In mid June, I injured my knee at 38, giving me my first knee injury in my life.

The first week was hell, but tissue work and support products helped me get through a hiking trip out West...but it was really tough.

After I came back, I rested and rehabbed a ton, but I have good days and bad days. After a total of 4wks, I went to the doctor because it just isn't right.

Dr agreed that something is concerning and referred me for an MRI (and also congratulated me on waiting and doing my own rehab, apparently insurance is making people do 6wks of PT before approving an MRI).

The wait for an MRI sucks (mid August), and I can't rest any more.

What are some lower body exercises that are generally "safe" for a yet-to-be-determined injury?

Currently, I walk fine (with occasional discomfort) and I feel like I'm getting consistently better...until something happens where I need to quickly react and feel like I have serious instability.

What is the injury? Are you limited in range of motion? Does it hurt constantly? Only during certain ranges of motion?

I tore my ACL over 20 years ago. MRI confirmed the tear along with some meniscus damage. I was 21 years old at the time and never had surgery.

I joined the military 15 years ago and have never had an issue running for my annual PT test. I actually run faster than a lot of kids 10 years younger than me.

Now I don't do squats with a ton of weight on the bar. I try to keep it around 245 or so but I can leg press over 500 pounds and get around 235 pounds on a leg extension machine.

For me it's knowing the limits of my stability and not pushing it. I have zero knee pain and can do almost anything physically with it. I have had a few cases of it buckling but I was doing stupid shite like playing racquetball and basketball (landed on another player's leg and twisted it). After a few days of swelling it is fine.

I'm 5'11" and weigh 175 pounds for reference.

Obviously stay away from heavy squats if you have knee stability issues. You can try to do body weight squats or maybe goblet squats. Maybe sissy squats; I don’t fine that loads the knees. You’re going to have to experiment a little. Stay in the pain free range of motion, and stay safe.

I’m having an MRI on Tuesday. I’ve been having left lateral knee pain. Extremely painful after I run. Once it cools down after a few days I’m good. I’m still able to squat heavy but can’t run at all.

X-rays showed a small bone fragment loose but when compared to some 2019 X-rays, it was there then but it’s moved some.

Glad I didn’t have to do the 6 weeks of PT. Did that in 2019 for my right one. Waste of time. Had surgery for a medial and lateral meniscus tear.
