I have my first Brazilian jiu jitsu competition on August 21st.

I have between 2.5-5 lbs to lose, my fluid intake is high so my weight fluctuates a lot. I’m where I’m at weight wise but since I have to weigh in with my gi and uniform on the day of competition so I do have a mild weight cut.

Any extra pointers would be appreciated!

You can cut this in water in like 4 hours.

True but if my competitions weigh in is the same day or hour before starting time (I need to read the guidelines again) then my performance could be compromised.

I guess I should restrict my fluids the second the last week to see how it impacts my body

Your coaches don’t know? 5lbs doesn’t seem like much to cut even if you don’t really know what you are doing.

Well I’m sure they do but my main coach is a heavy weight so he doesn’t have to cut weight. I’m sure I’m just over stressing it.

Last time I did a mild weight cut with a coach (different sport for a national competition, weigh in 1hr prior to competition) my performance sucked.

I’d probably try to cut the weight and stay near it during the week or two before the event. Then maybe all you have to do is hop on a treadmill in a rubber suit for a few minutes to sweat the rest.

I'm assuming this is the BJJ World League in Frisco, TX. I'll also be competing at that event and need to cut weight. I'm a male, white belt, 43 yrs old shooting for the 168 lb and under weight class. What level are you competing in?

Are you 3-5lbs heavy with or without the gi?

If you're only up 3lbs in the gi just take a water pill the week leading up to it and limit fluid the day before.

If you're 5lbs over without the gi IMO you need to get somebody at your gym who regularly cuts for fights to help you.

I weighed my myself with Gi and it adds about 3 lbs. That puts me about 175 needing to drop 7 lbs. I return from vacation Tuesday and will need to hit it hard to shed the weight. I'm going to tighten up my diet real hard for three weeks, so I should be fine.

They do give you 0.9 lb if needed, so 168 is really 168.9. I went to watch the one on June 12th and I heard they were even more lenient than that. Probably trying to make sure they have enough competitors in each division.

Well there’s over 1000 participants in this one. I think there’s 5 in my division, there was 7 at one point

I did buy a lighter gi as well, it’ll be my competition one. I’ll just continue to monitor my carbs and limit my fluid intake the last two weeks.

After Some training sessions I’ll weigh 188-190 once I take the gi off

After this tournament I’m looking to compete in a judo event next year

As of Thursday I weighed 194.4 in the gi

I just need to keep my diet consistent by lowering the carbs and not drink so much fluids. Should be fine

Some moderate level cardio right when you wake up: ~30-45 min staying in the 125-140 HR

Light cardio in the evening: Walk a mile.

Eat better and drink lots of H2O.

You will drop the weight in 2 weeks and you can adjust to stay there.

If you’re dead set on actually cutting for a white belt competition, go talk to your coaches who’ve done it before. If you take bad advice on here you’re going to be sluggish as frick and feel terrible, and your first competition isn’t the place you want to feel like that.

Take it from the guy who weighs exactly what you weigh and cut 5 pounds improperly before his first competition- do it right with legitimate expert advice or don’t do it at all. This isn’t the place to get BJJ or MMA comp advice, again, go to your coaches.

Eat watermelon and drink 6 protein shakes a day.

180 grams of protein at approximately 800 calories.

I also did that.

After a 3 day vacation I weighed 194.4 with my gi on yesterday. After training/practicing for 2 hours yesterday I was about 183 taking the gi off. I’ve made a few minor changes and I haven’t felt tired or sluggish yet

Do you have a weighted gi or something? assuming 4-5 pounds for the gi, that’s 7-8 pounds of water weight over the course of what I’m assuming was an open mat. Pretty crazy. Either way, good luck and have fun, first comp is definitely a fun experience

Also, if you want BJJ specific advice, you should consider joining the BJJ Fanatics Facebook group. There’s like 10,000+ people and a bunch of world class guys who are active in there
