I have a theory that bbq shrimp is really a bastardization of Gambas al Ajillo. Whoever the businessman who went to Chicago was (in the popular legend) probably ate that and came back to New Orleans and tried to explain that dish.
They are very similar in ingredients (one uses butter or oleo originally in place of olive oil) and technique (cook in a shallow pan over moderate heat).
