I'll take a stab. Escapism. Great movies are almost always a grind to watch they take an actual emotional toll on the viewer. Due to access, we are beset on all sides by emotional real-life content so when we sit down to be entertained we are more likely to queue up some fun but brainless movie.

A lot of times when I am trying to decide what movie to rewatch I find myself skipping over the "deep" stuff and opting for a shallow comedy instead which absolutely would not have happened 20 years ago.

Because you have to put your phone down and pay attention while you're watching it. We are watching film at home with tons of distractions instead of in a theater where you are totally focused on the film. This hurts anything that requires a small amount of thought.
