"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans." - LOU GEHRIG

Amazing
In the 38 season, the one before he had to quit
He played 157 games and hit .295
You know he had symptoms then

Lou died almost two years later in 1941.
Steve Gleason was diagnosed 10 years ago and because of newer medical treatments and technological advances, he's has been able to soldier on, despite a sharp mind trapped in an anatomical prison.
I don't have 1/100th of the balls to it takes face that sort of adversity.

It's an unthinkable twist of fate that the man nicknamed "the Iron Horse" who was born at 14 pounds and the only one of four children to survive past infancy...
Would die of a very rare disease at age 37.
In 1927 Ruth and Gherig alone hit more homers than every team in baseball except one.
Gherig was the first athlete to have his number retired.

My favorite player ever. I have a framed print of the picture of Gehrig after he voluntarily pulled himself out of the game due to his illness. It’s hanging in my office and his look of stoicism in it is to remind me that it could always be worse and attitude is everything.

Pride of the Yankees shows Gherig pulling himself out of the game midway...
He removed himself from the lineup before the game.
He removed himself from the lineup before the game.
quote:
But Gehrig, the captain, first carried the lineup card to home plate.
Stunned by the announcement of a New York batting order without Gehrig, the Detroit crowd accorded the visiting star a warm ovation as he walked back to the dugout. After appearing in an unprecedented 2,130 consecutive games, Gehrig never would play again.
Few moments in baseball have approached the poignancy of Gehrig’s farewell. Dahlgren said it was only after McCarthy whispered in his ear, “If Lou starts to fall, catch him,” that he understood the full significance of what he was witnessing.
He was standing just far enough away from Gehrig to make him sweat at the prospect. “I watched him closely as he gave his speech,” Dahlgren said. “It looked like he was wearing a motor in the back. His rear end was just trembling.”

What people don't know is that the game Gherig removed himself from the lineup, he sat on the bench with a towel over his head...some players said he was crying.
The Yankees clobbered the Tigers 22-2 that day...and Gherig's replacement at 1st...Babe Dahlgren came to Gherig in the 7th inning and said, "Lou you have to go in now to keep your streak alive" but Gherig wouldn't go in...he came to him in the 8th and again Gherig declined...and then in the 9th but Gherig said no.
