Check for a used Pontiac Aztec.

I own a ‘15 base model outback 4 cyl.
The thing is slow and noisy. Interior is spacious and accommodating. Sound system sucks. Touch screen interface sucks. It’s slow to adjust volume, with dial or buttons which is annoying. It gets 31 mpg on the interstate and does fine on 87 octane. The CVT transmission is the weakest thing in the world. It’s an ugly car in my opinion. I can’t get rid of it because it’s cheap and it does everything I need it to do.

There are a lot of them around my area. The lesbian stuff is moronic and carryover from a stupid marketing ploy decades old. People buy them now for safety and incredibly effective all wheel drive and reliability.
Neighbor has 2021 model. He says it’s incredibly safe and reliable. Has features to essentially drive itself.
I rode with him and it’s really comfortable. Surprisingly so. The cabin is nicely laid out. The screen interface is good but it looks like geared for younger driver.
Overall, I was really surprised at how nice his car rode.

They're great vehicles. We have a Legacy (2017), 70k on it now no problems. My mom has a 2020 Forester, no problems.
Look for a certified used one to get the 100k warranty.

curious what kind of camper is 1500 lb. Is that a clam shell?
If long vacations are the main thing, I think you'd be more comfortable in a mini van. IDGAF what anyone says, mini vans are some of the most comfortable vehicles around

All I know is that Subaru has an excellent 4WD system and they are my favorite Japanese car; this coming from a guy that generally does not like Japanese cars and prefers/owns a lot of European cars...
