re: small generator and wiring question

I would install a small sub panel in your shack. It will give you much more flexibility in the future to add circuits if you want to put more outlets, lighting, etc.

Also, if you ever planned on running an underground feeder to the shack to ditch the generator, it would be much simpler to terminate the wires at the panel.
