If we went back to the McGuffey reader to teach reading, we would be light years ahead of our current “balanced literacy” approach.

Mississippi took the approach of teaching reading as a science a couple years back. They're making children better readers early on and that contributes to success in all subjects. For the most part, reading is the most critical skill a child can master early and it's obvious to anyone with a functioning brain why. Kudos to MS.
