I had no idea how much amazing music has came out of this country, until Civilization V's soundtrack sent me down a Bossa Nova rabbit hole a few years ago.

I still don't know much of anything about Tropicalia or artists like Gal Costa, Jorge Ben, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, or much of anything else outside of the late 50s/60s.

But, just in that decade or so, you had Tom Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Vinicius de Moraes, Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66, Walter Wanderley, Baden Powell, Elis Regina, Astrid Gilberto, and several others.

Those artists probably put out enough great music between them to put their country no lower than 3rd, when it comes to exporting great music to the rest of the world. But their history of music goes way beyond Bossa Nova and Samba.

Is there any other country that could even make an argument for being in the top 3 with America and the UK?

I really like bossa nova but I have to be in the mood for it.

Same here. I like to listen to it when I'm just wanting to chill out. It makes great background noise when you're reading or doing whatever online.

It might be an age thing, but I'm listening to a lot more Jazz and Bossa Nova than anything else lately.

My first thought for music from Brazil was Sepultura.

Nothing wrong with that. I'm hoping to get more familiar with bands/musicians from there that are from other genres and decades. Just haven't had a chance to branch out yet.

I like some of the popular 90s musicians like Marisa Monte, Carlinhos Brown, and Chico Cesar.

Choros is the precursor of samba and is a joy to listen to. Check out os ingenuos as a jumping off point. Jacob do bandolim as well.

Some tropicalia to check out as well is os mutantes.

Probably my all-time favorite singer is Flora Purim. Her husband, Airto, probably plays on at least 30 albums I own. Sergio Mendez was a big stateside success and who can forget Astrud Gilberto on 'Girl from Ipanema'?
And metal wise, Max Cavalera- Sepultura, Soulfly & Cavalera Conspiracy!

Thanks for the leads on some new music. Do you ever listen to Elis Regina? I'm still making my way through her albums, but the ones that she did with Tom Jobim and Toots Thielemans are both incredible albums.

She supposedly released some tropicalia albums, but I haven't gotten to them yet.
