Would somebody please be kind enough explain to an English dude the massively overly complicated contract scenario playing out?
I was always under the impression that after the first 4 years of the rookie contract (much like BI and Zo) you either let them walk, sign them to a max extension or let them go to RFA and match if you want. Basically controlling their destiny.
But I’m hearing there’s a ‘get out’ where Zion could potentially ‘opt out’ and sign a ‘qualifying offer’ …whatever the frick that is.. and then becomes a UFA the next season? So in 2 years time he could walk? Even though that mean he would be leaving a shite tonne of money on the table and the highest profile player to do that was a meagre Greg Munroe =|

That's how Restricted Free Agency works.
They can re-sign. Or.
They can sign a Qualifying Offer. They play one year under that QO. And then they are a Unrestricted Free Agent.
There's a reason why almost no player ever has done it. It is a massive risk and it leaves a substantial amount of money on the table.
Its better to get your money and then demand a trade a year or two later.
