you're forgetting Toledo, where Saban took over a team that went 6-5 each of the two prior years and went 9-2. He also took over at Mich. State, which hadn't had a winning record the prior 4 years, and was under NCAA sanctions that included scholarship reductions.
Saban had Mich. State at 9-2 his final year.

Remember, stats and numbers always require context. A coach taking over a middling or poor program may not have instant success and it may take time to build the roster. Thus, some very good coaches may not have spectacular W-L numbers early on at a program.

It's like a surgeon who takes on riskier cases. His success rate will be lower, but that's because he's doing harder cases than a lesser surgeon who won't take on the tough cases.
