I, personally, blame social media and the "Read only the headline" mentality it has fostered.

It became evident our media had been rendered entirely useless when to a person they all refused to ask the obvious, difficult questions at the daily Covid briefings held across the country. Out of all the outlets around the US, only a handful even attempted to get answers. They all sat there on their Zoom calls, or six feet apart in person, and gobbled up the info fed to them, then printed it without question. They all seemed content to ignore the obvious discrepancies and clear signs that these people didn't have a fricking clue, probably out of fear of being cut out of the loop. That is not their job. That is not what they are meant to be.
