Texas Democrats’ late-night walkout scuppers Republican efforts to restrict voting rights

Guardian article
quote:
Texas Republican have failed in their efforts to push through one of the most restrictive voting measures in the US after Democrats walked out of the House at the last minute, leaving the bill languishing ahead of a midnight deadline.
quote:
Less than 24 hours earlier, the bill seemed all but guaranteed to reach Abbott’s desk. The bill had passed in the Senate on party lines around 6am on Sunday, after eight hours of questioning by Democrats who had virtually no path to stop it. However, a Democrat walkout prevented a quorum in the House.
quote:
In closed-door negotiations, Republicans added language to Senate Bill 7 that could make it easier for a judge to overturn an election. They also pushed back the start of Sunday voting, when many Black churchgoers go to the polls. The measure would also eliminate drive-thru voting and 24-hour polling centers, both of which Harris county, a Democratic stronghold, introduced last year.
quote:
Michael McCaul, a senior US House Republican from Texas, told CNN he thought the law “may be more of an optics issue, restoring confidence with the American people. In my state you actually do believe that there was tremendous fraud.” There was not. Texas has only one pending voter fraud case arising from the 2020 election. Nonetheless it is the last big battleground in Republican efforts to tighten voting laws, driven by Donald Trump’s lie that the presidential election was stolen. Joe Biden on Saturday compared the Texas bill to election changes in Georgia and Arizona, as “an assault on democracy”. Since Trump’s defeat, at least 14 states have enacted restrictive voting laws, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. It has counted nearly 400 bills nationwide.

How could it have been "all but guaranteed to reach Abbott's desk" when this Democrat walkout was surely a known possibility from the jump??

Sounds like Democrats hate democracy

Harkens back to the Jim Crow era. Worse than that even.

Yes indeed.
When the left starts pushing that, It’s really them saying.
Stop, you are limiting our ability to commit voting fraud.

Restrict voting?
Don’t you mean fortify the election process?

Here's one I really like:
"It would have prohibited the after-hours and drive-through options that voting rights advocates said helped Black and Latino voters in the Houston area cast their ballots in the 2020 election."
Exactly what is it that hampers black and latino people's ability to vote either during "regular" hours or physically inside the voting location that would so desperately necessitate after-hours and drive-through?? I mean, it's gotta be something rather significant to make such a bold and heroic stand over it.
I'm actually a bit offended on behalf of black and latino voters due to Democrats' positions like this. Because the insinuations seem offensive.

Weird thing to say, since the Republicans are the ones trying to restrict voting rights for American citizens.

The rules would be the same for everyone. That's perfectly fair.

Show me in ANY of these laws that a properly registered, legal voter CANNOT vote in an election.

So let me get this straight...you have issues with state legislatures fortifying the state rules, that all have to abide by, to prevent fraud in non-election years, but no problem with election rules being changed on the fly by people not legally able to, months prior to a major presidential election??

It has been asked, but again, how does the Texas law restrict voting rights? Explain. Lay it out. Make your case.

That shows the author's bias. They are making it out to be some last-minute, heroic push to save the right to vote for millions of Texans. In actuality, everyone involved probably knew this bill never had a chance to reach Abbott's desk due to the fact that Democrats had the numbers to pull exactly what they did.
