Playing there for the first time on Sunday. Any advice or info from anyone who's played it?

My advice is to go to Canebrake or Timberton instead. If you must play Shadow Ridge, buy a 12 pack in the clubhouse and consume the entire thing during your round

Goat ranch. Timberton is the best in the area open to the public. HCC and Canebrake are the best (I’m partial to HCC, but I’m a member), but you would need a member to get you on either.

Lol thanks guys. Unfortunately it's on our golf league schedule. I was suspicious of the $45 weekend rate on their website.
Luckily we have Windance next month, and Timberton in September.

Good to know. I drive to Birmingham for work once every few months and hit courses on the way there and back. I played timberton and enjoyed it and Shadow Ridge was way down on my list but I will just remove it completely.

On a bright note, their food is legit.

Just played there recently and the greens are scary fast. I consider myself a good putter and I putted off 3 greens. The tees, fairways, greens and even the bunkers are well kept but it is rough on the edges. It is imperative to keep the ball in the fairway, no matter what you hit off the tee. The uphill shots play much longer than you think. Be wary of the hazard on #2. The par 5's are all tough holes with lots of hazards. I did not score very well the first time I played there, but think I will do much better the next. Keep the ball in play, try to keep the ball below the hole and watch you speed on the putts and you will enjoy the course. The PGA golf professional there Jamie and the staff are all very helpful!!

Thank you! I know most have said it's a goat ranch, but it's not like we're swimming in pristine public courses in my area. Looking forward to the elevation changes as that reminds me of playing back in GA where I grew up.
Hopefully these last few days of sunshine have dried things out. Nothing worse than a league tournament that's CPO

Just got home from playing, and holy shite. If this is y'all's goat ranch, you should see the bullshite we play in here in the Baton Rouge area. The greens were in great shape and slick as shite. Overall it was a very fun track and loved the elevation changes. But man, those greens ate me up.
Apparently I wasn't alone. When a 5 HC in the group shoots a 90, I didn't feel as bad about my 102. I must've had 45-50 putts out there it feels like.
Oh, and you guys were right, food was definitely legit afterwards. It's a long hike from BR but that's a decent course for $45 on the weekend

MS has some good courses, but it’s pretty elitist to call SR a goat ranch. They are either comparing it to Canebrake/Hattiesburg Country Club or have never actually played a goat ranch. Course had a bad run 5-10 years ago and I guess people never let them live that down. Staff is good, food is good and it’s a fun layout.
Complaints are it is crowded on weekends, but for $45? I’d like to know where people are playing for $45 that is better.

Glad you liked it - it is hard to relay to folks how hard it is to putt fast greens that have a little slope. I enjoyed Shadow Ridge also and agree with your assessment!! I think we both will play better the next time. Jamie and the entire staff do a great job, it sure makes it more fun playing somewhere you feel welcome and the food is good and the beer is cold!
