Guessing a lot of people didn't watch many, if any, of the nominated stuff so there wasn't much vested interest in it this year.
This is honestly probably one of the biggest factors. Not a lot of movies came out that could gain popularity with the general crowd.
I typically see two or three of the movies nominated but this year I didn't see a single one although Sound of Metal looks good.

It’s much more fun to listen to people say it’s political tho

That can be said for many years though. A lot of the Oscar winners are usually not from the most popular movies. More many of these movies are ones critics think highly off but didn’t necessarily blow up at the box office

agreed, but what's crazy is that most of these are available with streaming. 5 years ago Manchester by the sea was the first streaming movie nominated (if memory serves me correctly) and things like fences, hell or high water, la la land were around for maybe a week or two in theaters.
this year mank, sound of metal, judas and the black messiah, trial of the chicago 7, and nomadland were all pretty much straight to streaming and i only watched 2 of them.
eta: part of that is a desire to see the movies as well. Trial of the Chicago 7 is literally socialist bullshite with rose colored glasses, mank is a hollywood circlejerk, and nomadland and the father just looked like another nebraska, favourite, marriage story, the wife etc. that were just slogs and gut punches to get through despite good performances.
