Doesn't need to design a shoe already released.

It looks like Kobe's even on resale right now may be contributing to investing/retiring.

In five years, Kobe Bryant will be an afterthought.
When I was a kid, everyone idolized Dr. J. We later found out that he was Shaq's favorite player growing up. I believe Magic and Bird signed with Converse because of Dr. J.
After Dr. J retired, he was the main spokesman for Converse. Sure, the had Magic and Bird doing commercials, but it was Dr. J who went around trying to get players to sign up with Converse. As I recall, I believe I remember reading in the Reveille how Dr. J was on campus to pitch Shaq on Converse when Shaq had declared for the NBA.
However, by that time, Dr. J was basically an afterthought. Everything had become Air Jordan and Nike started to dominate the sneaker market because of Air Jordans. And, then Jordan became the greatest player in NBA history winning 6 Championships in 8 years (1.75 years he didn't play). As a result of that legacy and the market dominance Air Jordan's already commanded, he got his own brand and campus on the Nike campus.
NO SHOE will ever compete with Air Jordans. Not LeBrons. Not Kobes. Air Jordan will always be the standard probably long after both we and he are gone.
Dr. J AND Converse are now afterthoughts. If someone would have told you that in the 80's, even five years after Dr. J retired, you would have thought that they were nuts. BUT, that's the cycle of sports athletes and the products they endorse. Jordan is the SOLE exception.

You can’t compare the nba then to the nba now. The popularity is apples and oranges.
To think that Kobe will be largely forgotten in FIVE YEARS is insane.

Yeah - it's not like anyone else is going to pay for Vanessa Bryant shoes. And, unless there is something in the 2016 contract to the contrary, I'm guessing that Nike can still sell all the Kobe gear it generated when Kobe (and his estate) was under contract. Just a guess, but I'm guessing that Vanessa thought she was going to get Jordan-type money and Nike was offering Jimmer Fredette-type money.

I had those Kobe 2’s in the 6th grade. Thought I was the coolest mf’er on the playground

I didn't say FORGOTTEN.
Dr. J isn't FORGOTTEN.
But, his "endorsement" will not mean much especially if he's not designing the shoes himself. Like someone else stated, for long retired/dead stars like Kobe, the money will be in the Retros - and they'll always take a backseat to Retro Jordans. No need to sign his wife to a LIFETIME Jordanesque contract for that.

DIAF you piece of filth.
Nike has been releasing limited quantities of Kobe's shoes on SNKRS at insane prices. Vanessa wants the Kobe line to be widely available at the standard $125-$150 price tag for people, including kids, to buy, which it hasn't been. That's not a crazy ask, it's what is right for fans and the general shopper.
It's not going to be a "vanessa bryant" shoe. It's still Kobe's brand and I bet different artists and designers would have had their imprint on the line going forward. Kobe's sneaker line are also very comfortable and great basketball shoes.

Actually it does. Nike has only been selling limited quantities on SNKRS at insane prices and the common fan/consumer can't get their hands on them. Then they hit the resale market at even higher prices that only collectors can afford.
Vanessa wants them widely available to everyone at the standard price point.

Excuse me. “An afterthought.”
If you had said 25 years, sure. But five?!
You can’t compare Kobe to Dr. J. Once Dr. J stopped playing, he was essentially gone. But YouTube and highlights allow for younger fans to watch Kobe like fans before them never had an opportunity to with stars of yesteryear. Plus the popularity of the game is so much bigger now than it was then.

And, Dr. J was 10x's the man and role model than Kobe ever was. A true gentleman. And still is.

Who, other than Michael Jordan, still makes a ton of money off shoe deals post-retirement? Much less a guy who isn't alive anymore to market the product at all. I'm guessing their issues had little to do with them making enough shoes for kids and more to do with them wanting more money for the deal than made sense to Nike. In thre short-term, I'm sure the deal would be very lucrative, but in the long term? I don't think so, and she wanted a lifetime contract? What does lifetime even mean to her? Her lifetime, her kids' lifetime, etc?

Great. I’m unsure of what that has to do with how prevalent they may be in basketball moving forward, but this has clearly just become a vessel for you to complain about Kobe.
Comparing him to Dr. J or even Bird and Magic is silly. They all may have been better than Kobe, but it was a different time. Basketball, sneakers, pop culture were all substantially different then than they would become.

Iverson’s deal with Reebok includes a $55 million trust once he turns 55.

That deal was struck when he was still playing in leui of them paying him more up front. The deal was for $800k/year for life and $32 million to be placed in trust until he turns 55. That's not even close to what we're discussing.

My apologies. I thought you asked who makes money from a shoe deal after they had retired.

Dr J was an absentee father, he had a kid he never saw. Remember when she did well at Wimbledon it came out.
