I know a head college coach at a lower level that is great recruiter. He brings in some talent makes you say wow. That kid has d 1 ability. How did he pull that kid? Year after year though the team has a limited ceiling. The kids never seem to full get it together and a lot either give up basketball or go other places.
Sound familiar?
One thing this guy does is spend more time recruiting than he he does developing players. He always has his eyes on the next prize and is never focused on working with what he currently has. He uses threats like “I’ll just bring in someone to replace you” instead of trying to figure out solutions to the people he has. He doesn’t know how to balance recruiting and player development. He is horrible at player development.
As I watch him and then watch Wade and his players, it makes me wonder if Wade is like this guy. I know it is taboo to talk about Wade because of that moron Dick but I wonder what Wade’s perception would be if that didn’t go down.

Funny thing about bashing a “4yr player”. Y’all trashed skylar Mays and he ended up being the best player in the Wade era lol
The more things change the more they stay the same. Lester is forever a moron.

Why was Gray included in the OP? Did I miss something? I haven’t seen anything about him leaving yet

Why do you think he would transfer lol
Because starters from other competitive teams are coming to play for Wade.
May he has seen Fudge and Knight in Practice and decided, I can't compete with that.
Whatever the reason, I wish him well. I enjoyed his play and sorry he is leaving.
But a mans gotta do what he thinks is best for himself.

Wade seems to have a pretty good record of sending them to the NBA, if they stay until they are ready.

Skylar Mays was also 6’4, Cook is 5’10 maybe. Skylar always had the intangibles, Cook doesn’t really. It’s not that hard to see

I guess people are more upset because he is a local kid and wouldn't be losing their minds so much if it was a kid from say, NYC, who is transferring. Everyone thinks their hometown kid is the "best they've ever seen" and can't reconcile that the hometown college may not see it that way. Hell, there isn't a lot (if any) outrage over Hyatt leaving and he was MUCH bigger contributor. And it's not like Cook is leaving to be replaced by lower ranked recruits with zero experience. LSU just brought in a guy with 3 years of proven SEC starting experience. Wade said multiple times towards the end of the season that the team needed to "get older" and he seems to be doing that.
For whatever reason Cook didn't play a lot last season. Part of it was you weren't going to take a lot of minutes away from Smart/Thomas (the highest scoring backcourt in the SEC last season). The other part was that with limited bench minutes to be had at the guard sport Wade decided to go with Gaines. While he was inconsistent, Gaines has physical attributes that probably gives him a higher ceiling. We certainly saw some "bad" from him (terrible shot late in the Michigan game for which Wade chewed his arse and benched him), but there was also very noteworthy "good" that was there as well (SECT games vs. Ole Miss and Arkansas).
Is Cook a guy that could develop into a really good 4 year player? Probably. But CBB is as much a "win now" sport as any and teams are turning over their rosters constantly to achieve that. It's just the lay of the land right now. Clearly Wade wants to bring in some instant impact guys. Unfortunately, some attrition from the current roster had to take place to accommodate that. And truth be told, this could be a really good thing for Cook. He can go elsewhere and perhaps play more minutes immediately rather than wait his turn at LSU. Say what you want about Wade, but none of the guys that have left/transferred have had big impacts elsewhere other than Brandon Rachal...who was pushed out more for disciplinary reasons.
Wade is not infallible. There are reasons for criticism. But talent acquisition isn't one of them. If he is willing to let Cook and Hyatt walk (or nudge them out) it is not because he doesn't have someone in mind who he thinks is better waiting to replace them.

It takes more than just being on the same team for four years. I think Cook is just too short and not fast enough. At that size you are a defensive liability and you better have a lot of offensive firepower to offset it.
Let's face it, the big guys now have skills that you would only see guards have fifteen years ago. Most top tier teams now field a lineup where anyone can score. With every shot and trip down the court contested so strongly, you just can't afford to have short players who suffer on switching due to a screen. It's bad enough when you have a 6'3" guard on a 6"8" guy but impossible when the guard is only 5' 10".

Except he was our best on ball defender all season

Number two, what you are talking about is his ability to check a guy bringing it up the court which he is very good at. What I am talking about is when the ball is across half court and you are in your set defense. Whether it is his own man shooting over him or having to switch to a much bigger guy, he is going to have a tough time stopping them.
In a zone defense it would be the same thing. A 5'10" guard is not going to bother a 6'3" to 6'5" shooter in the corner or the wing going for a three pointer.

Why are there so many Jalen Cook homers on here
He is a good player, but clearly thought he was going to be given the keys this year. Wade is trying to build the absolute best team he can to compete at the highest level, so if players equal or better than Cook want in, is it WW's job to factor in Jalen Cook's feelings? GTFO with that.
Bottom line is Cook wanted out.

Agreed. He should have been in over Gaines.

Cam Thomas is tall. How many shots did he affect?
What we are disputing here is the “combine freaks” vs actual good ball players. Some guys have all the measurable but just don’t seem to put it all together. Other guys lack the physical attributes yet find a way to get it done.
In a football analogy, would you rather two star recruit Clyde Edwards Elaire, or 5 star John Emery?

Except the college football and college basketball recruiting landscapes couldn't be more different right now.
And Gaines > Cook

Because WW is seeking help on Transfer Market & Parents weren't happy with his PT.
No hard feelings but wish he had stuck around and been a vital part of this BB team over next few years.

Gaines
I’m pulling for him to have a Tim Quarterman type trajectory. TQ struggled his freshman year, looked lost out there at times, but gradually improved each season and became a very good player at LSU.
I hope the same happens for Gaines.

I doubt he "let him walk". I agree that I hate to see him leave but NCAA is making it very easy right now, which explains the chaos.

I don’t think he pushed Cook out the door. Clearly he thinks Cook has talent or he wouldn’t have given him the minutes he did last year as a true freshman. But he was probably honest with Cook that he would have serious competition for his minutes again this year, and Cook thinks he deserved to play more last year and moving forward. Sometimes there’s no one to blame for a player transferring. It’s okay to wish him well and not second guess the coach for letting a solid but unspectacular talent get away.

You can’t be taken seriously by saying Jalen Cook is better than Gaines. Gaines played twice as much, had extremely impactful moments during the season, was higher coming out of HS. You’re literally saying Cook is better based on absolutely nothing.
