We could detect it a very long way out.

That doesn't mean we will and even if we did it would take a while to determine if it would hit earth and we wouldn't really determine that it would hit earth so much as theorize that it MIGHT hit earth and if we determined it might hit earth we would probably squabble about what to do about it for so much time that it would be too late before we came up with a plan and if we came up with a plan it would have a low probability of success before human error or external factors were even calculated.

Long story short? It isn't worth NASA's or your time to worry about that shite. You have 10,000 times better chance to die being hit by a car while not paying attention (probably busy worrying about shite like this) to where your feet are at the moment than this.
