Any fish keepers here? I got a 55 gallon tank last year and I’m almost done with it. 5 yellow labs, 5 yellow tail acei, 5 white tail acei, 5 blue johannis, 5 red zebras and I ordered 6 rusties this weekend that should arrive Tuesday. They’re all a bunch of little assholes but they’re so much fun to watch.

I did the aquarium thing twice. First time I had a nice variety of fresh water fish.
The next time I kept only a Pacu that got almost as wide as a dinner plate.

When you say this:
quote:

I’m almost done with it.

In regards to owning and keeping an aquarium, it could really go either way.

I wouldn't have been surprised if you had gone on and said it was free to the first OT poster to come pick it up.

They are fun, but can be frustrating. Learn as much as you can about them, because it is so much easier to get information now than it was 25 years ago, trust me.

Full grown, that seems like a lot of fish for a 55 gallon set up. What’s your filtration?

Yes, I have been researching like crazy. Initially I thought I was just going to do a community tank, but then I realized how amazing African cichlids are. They’re super aggressive, but they’re almost more fun to watch than tv. Lol

I’m running an fx4 with pot scrubbers and under gravel with power heads. The water stays crystal clear.

I run a similar set up on a 125, but with the FX5. Fluval makes such quality systems, you and I could probably get away with just running those canisters. Mine is set up for Discus.

Discus are freaking amazing. I don’t have the discipline to keep up with the maintenance for them.

Their fickleness is a little exaggerated. I just do regular water changes and use Seachem Stability after each one. I’ve kept them for a few years now and never lost one.

Get a Fluval or Eheim cannister or for more $ a wet/dry filter.
Water changes are crucial. Moving rocks can ease aggression. Always add multiple fish when introducing new tank mates. Adding a single to an established tank is almost always certain death with Malawi & Tanganyika cichlids as they are so territorial. Sometimes it helps to add new fish in the dark of night when everyone is asleep.
I did exotic and wild caught F0 African cichlids like Tropheus and Petrochromis over 30 years, just got tired of the never ending. maintenance. Had a 30 gallon in my dorm in Pentagon for a few years as an underclassmen.
2 things you can always get a smoking deal on via Craigslist: aquariums and musical instruments! People go all in and lose interest. Takes alot of time and dedication.
