If you have not played these yet, go do the needful.

Loved the first, enjoyed the 2nd, so-so on the 3rd.
It is a must-play, it doesn't hold your hand like the terrible Uncharted series, the game lets you play, but is very linear. That isn't bad all the time but hurts the more open-world feel of the last 2 releases.

Pretty much spot on for my thoughts. Graphics/mechanics/tomb raiding get better with each entry, but the first one was by far the best story and overall feel.
Two was real close to one though. Three, while not as good as one and two, was pretty good playing in Dolby Atmos. Dang jungle noises.

The bow in the games, esp the first, is one of the most fun uses with a bow in any modern video game.
Love just uses the bow and none of the guns.

I don't have a problem with linear if the story is good

Yes and no, it was refreshing in a way at the time, esp since everything went open-world but very few do good open-world.

Only played the first and I loved it.

i started #2 cuz it was on sale. is going back and playing 1 necessary?

Hmmm, don't remember.
DOn't believe it is necessary, more of an origin story.

Only for the story and the fact it is a better game. You get a little more info on Jonah and why he is there in TR2. More background about Lara's father.
If you are still towards the beginning of TR2, stop and play through TR. If you want to finish TR2, that is cool as well. Nothing would be spoiled.

I thought TR2 was the one with the Chinese dagger that turns the Italian guy into a dragon.

Had to pay slightly more on Steam (like $25), but they are all deeply discounted on there as well.
