Beat Costa Rica and yeah.

Last thing we need is to go into the game against Mexico at Mexico needing a result.

With that said, it's not that big of a deal if we qualify this time around considering that all of our best players from this U-23 generation are playing more important club matches in Europe.

Last few cycles, it was important, this time though, not so much.

I hope we qualify though just because it's fun to watch US matches with actual stakes.

This is gonna ruffle some feathers of the few posters who think it’s an important tournament

But no one cares about Olympic soccer

Often the big footballing nations don’t even participate or when they do they send their B/C squads while their best young players are playing in better u-18, u-19, u-20 and u-21 tournaments and even the World Cup

Spare me the one off with Brazil and Neymar, the did it bc they were the host nation and wanted to make up for the embarrassing WC loss to Germany

This tournament would be a good platform to see the best young American college soccer players get a chance.

Because Covid caused a delay they allowed those who would have been eligible a year ago to participate.

Yueill has been voted captain. I would love to see us back in the olympics because watching Stuart Holden, Sacha Kljestan, Jozy, Freddy Adu, Benny Feilhaber, Michael Bradley, and Charlie Davies play together in 2008 was one of my favorite parts of any olympics I’ve ever watched.

I mean, it’s not a really a one-off, though? It’s not a super strong tournament, but one or two countries will usually send an interestingly decent team, and the games are usually fun overall (Omar Abdulrahman TYFYS). That Brazil team was partly compensating for losing with a similarly strong team in 2012, too.

Might be a good year to try some random team of college players, but most years they’d get smacked by the handful of countries that have good players with some free time and a desire to win a gold medal. Just go review the squads of the past 20 years. I think you’ll be surprised.

Right. Gabriel Jesus and Gabigol were going to be playing no matter what.

We need to qualify and play. The ongoing trend of crashing out is not good for the federation or the younger players who need the game time at a decently high level.

Now that you mention this, I've kind of changed my stance. All of those guys you listed played important parts for the full national team in the following cycle (Yes, even Adu as a supersub in the 2011 Gold Cup).

So while we are solid with our first-team players in this current U-23 generation, it is important for these second and third tier guys to progress as well for depth purposes, especially this year with Nations League, Gold Cup and a full slate of qualifiers coming up.

The level isn’t decent vs a bunch of B or C teams from the stronger nations

Rather the kids be playing in the under what ever World Cup or the Toloun tournament

The best European kids won’t be in the Olympics

Bc of the Euros at the senior and other levels

Even if it wasn’t canceled this year it would be prioritized over the Olympics

Toulon Tournament > olympics because it’s more European

No bc better quality teams enter it

Not bc it’s more European bc you have teams from every region

Most nations don’t take the Olympic tournament serious, sorry you can’t accept that

No one said anything is wrong with liking it

You already said bc of that one tournament it has a special place for you

Still won’t change the fact most nations don’t care about it

Know what helped some of those players develop?

Getting their dick kicked in at Copa America 2007

Maybe, but Stu Holden and Benny Feilhaber have both talked about that 08 olympics being important to their development, being in that tournament atmosphere. I think it has more value than you give it credit for but I’m ok with agreeing to disagree on that point.
