I get the books blended together, so it could have not been in the original book, but one of them goes into the story of him as a "war time consigliere". But I'm almost certain the original book atleast references his talent for tactical street maneuvering. One of the books has Vito basically in the Castellamarese Wars (spelling), where he outdoes Masseria and Maranzano. They definitely indicate the Genco was crucial in Vito becoming who he was and reaching the heights into the business.

I only read the first book. Do you recommend the sequels? The Lucy Mancini Gaping Vagina interlude kind of turned me off from Puzzo's writing.

Yeh that shite was ridiculous. I think I read somewhere that was sort of a "frick you" to the publisher who had pissed him off. I think he didn't even want to write the book in the first place, but I could be wrong. I loved all of the books, but besides The Godfather, the Last Don and the Sicilian, the rest aren't written by Puzo I don't think. The second one may be, but I know a few were written by other people (possibly with his input) and some after he died.
To clarify, the last don is in a separate universe, and the Sicilian briefly has Michael and Vito in it, but its not really a "Godfather" universe story either.
