Why does CPM have to ask his players what position they played in high school?

When you're faced with getting bats in a lineup, it helps to know what positions a player can play other than what he was recruited to play.

most players at that level, with a few exceptions(lumbering catcher,) should be able to competently handle any position on the field for a few innings

Oh look, it's the week 1 argument back again. Find some new content buddy.

Until this year with the head scratching decisions I have supported Paul. I have however always criticized has lack of interest in recruiting. He should be fully aware about everything about a recruit he's bringing on campus.

I mean you can say it’s an old argument but OP has a point because mainieri continues to do the same things, therefore it’s not “old”

Is this common among other big schools? Or is Paul the only one who doesn’t actually recruit.

I read a couple of articles on this. It amazes me when I see that. Is he this disconnected?
BTW.....his bullpen management over the last 10 years has been horrible.

common. assistants do most of the recruiting/scouting then present that info to the head coach.
Paul can't go watch a high school game on a Tuesday night in Alabama for a pitcher he's recruiting because he has his own games and practices. thats why most commitments happen during the summer because a lot of kids play in regional tournaments so it's easier to scout and recruit players. cain is also gone during midweek games to go recruit

Ridiculous this is acceptable. We would run Coach O out of town if he pulled this.

Baseball recruiting is different than football.
Also in baseball it’s not uncommon for players to play different spots in HS.

Him admitting that before first game of the year says it all. He’s just cashing checks.

I think Paul is an idiot but I can defend him here.
Nolan recruits a pitcher out of Miami who throws mid 90's. He brings his eval to Paul from a game in which the kid pitched a complete game. Paul says ok, invite him over for a visit I will offer and pitch to get him committed.
Kid signs. Oh by the way coach even though I was a top 5 pitcher in my state, I also played third base even though you recruited me as a pitcher. Kid knows his future is in pitching. Probably 'had' to play 3B because high school kids play multiple positions to even out the roster.

alright hot shot. go to a regional perfect game tournament and ask who's there. you might get a hand full of head coaches who's school is in the area, but majority will be the assistants.

Hellmers was recruited as a two-way player. Not the same scenario. From Hellmer's bio:
quote:So not only was he a known infielder but he was local. What's the excuse again?
An excellent two-way player who could contribute both as an infielder and pitcher … enjoyed a nice career offensively at Jesuit High, and he was regarded as the top prep pitcher in the New Orleans area

quote:I'm not saying Cain doesn't do the majority of the work especially when it involves travel. PM didn't know the position of a kid who was recruited to play a position and who was down the road... You can't see the issue there?

I wasn’t very fast, but I could play any position on the field and would do fine until they hit me a ball.
Seriously, how can a guy be ok for a few innings? It’s not football or basketball where you get tired. You are as good as they play you have to make right then and there.

hellmers was recruited as a pitcher. he wasn't recruited as a third baseman. I dont know what you dont get about that.
it was probably Nolan who didnt even mention he could play infield. when you recruit pitchers, you recruit pitchers. doesn't really matter what else he played in high school. hell, 90% of the pitchers on the roster probably played in the field somewhere. you dont see pitchers only in high school very often.
Jared Poche played outfield for lutcher and hit like .400 his senior year. do you think anyone on the staff cared he played outfield?
