It’s been a few years since I’ve done one of these threads but with the next gen release and 2k “rebuilding” (notice I put that in quotes) the game for next gen I figured I’d give it a whirl.

First impressions: this game is very pretty. Offense is smooth. Players dunk. A lot. The ratings some of these players get are trash but that’s 2k for you. Why does Luka have 80+ 3pt rating when he’s an average to below average 3pter?

Shooting is very hard. Did some research and saw that square (PS5) with shot timer off is the way to go. As someone that’s used a mix of the right stick and square in the past, this is annoying. I find catch and shoot with right stick is much more responsive than square. That’ll be an adjustment. Because of shooting difficulty, I’m seeing a lot of 2-3 zone. As an OG 2-3 zone user idk if I’m happy about this or not.

Got my first first game winner last night. I was the Pels playing against the Nets. Again Dunking is so OP this year. I’ve gotten dunked on by Harden more than I’ve seen him dunk in a whole season. I have a C in the one even. Meanwhile Zion can’t dunk when Deandre Jordan is next to him. But I can stuff it with Lonzo and Ingram lol.

Anyway - last possession my opponent accidentally dribbles out of bounds with 15 seconds left. These dribble gods every year try to play PNO as if it’s 2 v 2 in park. I inbound to Ingram, milk the clock down to about 7 when my opponent gives me a lane. He rotates Reddick’s defender over, i hit Reddick wide open in the corner by pass out as it would give my opponent about 3ish seconds to answer. I had decided I wanted the last shot already. Not a smart move but one I’m willing to live with. I see Bledsoe cutting across the top of the key and hit him. My opponent then jumps thinking I’m out of time but there’s 1.8 seconds left. I move into the elbow at the top of the free throw line and sink a moving mid with Bledsoe! Bledsoe is also wayyyy better in 2k than he is irl

All in all I’m casually excited but I think it’s more due to being tired of 2k current Gen. Next Gen looks great and offense is fluid but I can already see some meta(s) and I’ve only played 3 games.

Some general pointers that I made for my 2k16 thread back in the day that imo hold up today:

Tip 1: Always get your guys back on defense. Don't even bother stealing the inbound pass. You're more likely to give up an easy bucket than you are stealing that pass
Tip 2: If they miss the 2nd free throw, that just became a fastbreak. Throw it up to your PG or SG streaking down the court. You can usually get off an uncontested 3 if the defending team is packing the paint (they usually are)
Tip 3: Look for cutting players. This is obvious but it's important to recognize it. A cutting player on this year's 2K is a guaranteed bucket. The defense is often too slow to do anything to stop him. You have to pick up the cutter before they get 10 feet from the hoop. Usually that's where it's intercepted. It's easy to get buried that way, needing a quick bucket in a game that's starting to get out of hand, often times my opponents will make that pass too late and my C picks them off.
Tip 4: The 2-3 zone is your friend. The 3-2 IMO is mostly trash. The guys in the corner often times play too far up and leave their guys wide open along the base line. The 2-3 if you're fast enough, can be awesome for a number of reasons. The defense rotates well and the help D usually isn't too much. I like the 2-3 when my opponent keeps running the P&R or doing give and go. This defense won't work well with the Warriors but it does great if you're quick with rotations against every other team on the game. Usually I try to keep the PG at the top of the key and I pull the SF out to the baseline often. It works like a disguised 3-2.

Any other 2k players on here? Just had my greatest game ever in the Rec and need to gloat about it. For the Rec this is a new career high in points and my first double double

Bowl Jackson: 51 points, 10 points

Guy I was matched against: 0 points, 3 assists

Their whole team: 39 points, 10 assists

This game is so much better when I’m not playing the Nets. It’s a chore to ply against James Harden PnR and then he posterizers the defender anytime I don’t bring help into the paint. Also 2k has ruined tier 3 for however long they’re keeping the Nets in tier 3. They bumped the Kings to tier 2

ETA: the Nets are a tier 2 team again.

I just played back to back games against the same guy. I’m the Blazers in both games. The first game they were the Hawks. In this game, I go 3-2 zone (been experimenting with this one since the 2-3 zone is so popular) from the beginning. One of the things I like to do when playing zone is meeting the ball carrier about half court. Maybe a step or two inside. This doesn’t make any sense IRL as it makes it easy for the ball handler to penetrate the zone but 2K gonna 2K. Why I like to do this is simple for the most part. Then zone already renders the PnR useless. I’m trying to force a turnover and get the offense playing fast and loose. They’ll drive into the paint then kick when my defenders are sitting in lanes. And cuz it’s 2K actions are delayed. They’ll see a defender start to rotate from the wing to the inside then pass. Now the defender moves back and by the time the pass is initiated it’s picked off.

I go 2-3 zone and like a described above, I’m pressuring the ball handler from about half court. This poor guy has never seen this before. Drives paint, kicks out, picked off, fastbreak, score. I’m now up 12-3 after 3 straight possessions like this. I’m not even playing offense. Trae Young drives, either tries to dump off to Capela and can’t or kicks outside too early. I’m up 19-5 at end of the 1st Q. 2nd Q is much the same and the guy quits when it’s like 52-32 or late 3rd. A couple Trae Young 3s and me goofing off allowed for him to trade baskets with me after we got midway thru the 2nd. I was being a jerk and flopping after buckets and tried an oop to myself with Simons that I knew wouldn’t work. The guy must’ve felt insulted and did the same on the end right before he quit. I did a quick pause unpause too after a Dame 3. I’m kinda a douche depending on the game and team. Even though I had the better team, I despise playing the Hawks. They were insanely good last year and Trae Young with the Twin Towers was untouchable.

2nd game I match with him. He’s the Wolves and as noted above I’m the Blazers. Before last night, I’d feel pretty good about this one. The guy I’m playing seems to be trash. He has an idea of what to do but isn’t really sure how to work the ball around. The wolves are mostly bad outside of 2 and a half players (DLoading is actually really good on here). So why am worried? I played as the Twovles last night against the Pacers. I didn’t even look at their roster. I just know they got KAT, DLoading is mediocre irl, Edwards is starting to figure it out at times. Other than how they play irl I couldn’t tell you what anyone’s attributes might be. I get to playing and first thing I do is get the ball to KAT. High pick and roll with Rubio (why my defender is even half attempting to guard Rubio idk), dump to KAT on the roll. Bucket. Okay it’s just like any other year. KAT is a handful and he’s going to be 99% of my offense. I tried to posterize one of the Holidays a few times but with Edwards but he doesn’t have any badges iirc and turns everything into a layup. I steal the ball and on the break with DLO I pull back, crossover and cut across the key for a pull-up mid. Bucket. I noticed DLo has really nice handles. He kinda feels like a poor man Kyrie. I can break down my defender going any direction. Another fastbreak opportunity, I kick it out to DLo, crossover one of the near the 3pt line, now it’s just me and Turner at the rim. I dribble in, spin out to the opposite side. Turner follows but is too slow. Layup is good. DLo might be my new favorite player to use. Then KAT came along. I hit a few 3s with KAT which my opponent then out of frustration went in and must’ve changed his D settings on KAT to SMOTHER and DENY BALL cuz Turner never left his hip again. High Pick and fade now. I’m in complete control and it’s not like my opponent is that bad. He’s tried on ball D, off ball D, sagging, etc.. Never did try zone or leaving Rubio completely. KAT is force to be reckoned with and DLo might be his best 2K self yet. The rest of the team is still terrible and the bench might be one of the worst in the game. I’d send them on the floor and pound the ball into the court for 23 seconds waiting for the starters to rest and come back on.
